Independence
Somalia gained its independence from colonization with a mixture of both chance and rebellion. The first step towards independence was driving the British out. There was one great rebellion that their religious and nationalist leader, Sayyid Muhammad Abdulla Hassan led. This rebellion eventually caused the British to desert the inland. After this, however, Italy took over the areas that the British were driven from. The final piece that led to Somalia's independence was Italy's defeat in World War I. After this war and twenty years of rule, Italy was defeated and it had to give up ownership of Somalia because they had been forced into a treaty that drove them out of the land. Somalia was given to the United Nations, and after ten years of rule Somalia was granted full independence. Unfortunately, by gaining independence, Somalia also lost all knowledge on how to govern themselves because then all the European rulers who knew how to rule abandoned them. Unfortunately, no one had ever taught any Somalis how to rule themselves. As a cause, Somalia had its independence but had no idea whatsoever what to do with it. Soon, the country was right back to where it started.
