So What?
After gaining independence, Somalia was thrust right back to the anarchist-state country that it sustained before, while holding little positives and many negative affects from imperialism. Despite the imperialism, Somalia retained its original religion and language, with only a very minor rise in ethnic groups. The main religion (Islam) that the Somalis embraced tended to drive away other religions before, during, and after imperialism. The reason that Somalia was not very impacted in many ways that other countries were by imperialism is because of their lack in education. Without anyone teaching the Somalis, they had no reason to change their culture, religion, language, etc. Trading partners remained consistent, because they did not know how to go about gaining new ones. In addition, no one had taught the Somalis on how to govern themselves. They soon fell back into anarchy with the little power being held by local leaders and divided clans. Despite this, colonization did increase urbanization and trade within Somalia, as a cause of the Italians imperialist rule. This was somewhat beneficial to the Somalis. However, imperialism had much more malevolent affects than benevolent affects for Somalia. Without educating Somalis about government and how to rule, Somalia fell hard. Famine levels are currently 40% for children. Approximately 60% of people in Somalia are below the poverty line. Without proper education, there was no stable government, Somalia does not have an effective way to address any of the situations that they have at hand.
